SACRAMENTO, CA – California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) today issued the following statement in response to the Texas elementary school shooting yesterday.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, EnviroVoters:

“The devastating tragedy yesterday leaves many of us wondering what to say that hasn’t already been said over and over again. But we can’t stay silent. The children and adults who lost their lives yesterday, and their communities that lost their loved ones, did so at the hands of state sanctioned killing.

“The federal government, and Texas’ government, not only failed to act but softened gun safety laws in recent years. This has directly caused over 200 murders from mass shootings in 2022, including the hate-fueled killings in Buffalo and North Charleston just a few weeks ago.

“What’s all too clear is that we aren’t in fact living in a democracy – we are living in a corporate greed controlled political system. But we can’t just point the finger at corporations paying politicians to enable this violence, the responsibility is on our lawmakers. They are the ones elected to serve and protect, they are the ones who should be held accountable.

“This all comes a day before the anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, another state sanctioned killing that was a highly visual picture of the thousands of police killings of Black and Brown Americans since that day two years ago. One life is too many and more than enough for action.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all. Join us at and on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
