SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, the California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on the election of Representative Hakeem Jeffries to House Democratic leader, Representative Katherine Clark to Democratic Whip, Representative Pete Aguilar to Democratic Caucus Chair, and Representative Ted Lieu to Vice Chair for the 118th Congress.

Statement from Mike Young, Political and Organizing Director, California Environmental Voters:

“We are excited to welcome a new generation of House Democratic leadership for the next Congress. Representative Jeffries, Representative Clark, Representative Aguilar, and Representative Lieu will be instrumental in leading the country to a green economy without emissions. We have a lot of work to do and we must act with urgency to defeat the power of corporate polluters and reverse our dependency on fossil fuels.

As we look forward to our new Congress, we also look back in gratitude at Speaker Pelosi’s legacy of strong and consistent leadership for California and the rest of the country. It is because of her leadership that we were able to pass critical clean energy investments, including the biggest climate bill in history – the Inflation Reduction Act. We are so proud that California’s legacy continues with Representative Aguilar and Representative Lieu.

It’s energizing to tackle the climate crisis and achieve the progress that is scientifically necessary with House leadership that reflects the age, gender, and racial diversity of our country. We look forward with excitement at this group’s vision and judgment in passing critical climate investments essential to our success.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
