Call for Biden to Expand San Gabriel Mountains National Monument | EnviroVoters Statement

LOS ANGELES, CA –  Following Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA), Representative Judy Chu (D, CA-28) and a coalition of Los Angeles leaders and advocates asking for President Biden to expand the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument in California, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) and the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) released the following statements:

“As a habitat for countless plants and wildlife, expansion of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument is critical to preserving biodiversity in the face of a changing climate. This is an opportunity to further preserve one third of Los Angeles County’s clean drinking water and create additional recreational opportunities for underserved communities,” said Mike Young, Political and Organizing Director, EnviroVoters. “We applaud the leadership of Senator Padilla and Representative Chu and call on the Biden Administration to protect our biodiversity, water, and green spaces.”

“The San Gabriel Mountains National Monument expansion will increase access to nature in one of the most dense population centers in the country while preserving plants and habitats for wildlife and conserving a critical source of water in the West,” said Leah Donahey, LCV’s Senior Federal Advocacy Campaigns Director. “LCV looks forward to working with local partners and the Biden-Harris administration to protect this special place now and for future generations.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
