What inspired you to get involved in the environmental movement?
“My first interest in the environmental movement began in 2018 after learning about the impacts of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. This involvement in the movement increased the following year after the Amazon rainforest saw a year-to-year surge in fires across multiple countries, which resulted in major threats to the Indigenous tribes living there. Because of this, I have made it my goal to be more knowledgeable on the environmental crisis and how I can contribute, even if on a smaller and local scale, to amend this global issue.”

What are your career goals?
“Through my majors in Business Psychology and Political Science and my current educational and leadership involvements, these experiences have been reflected through my drive to work in law. Ultimately, I hope to utilize my career to protect the fundamental rights of livelihood, security, and safeness regardless of race, gender, social identity, economic status, or nationality.”

What’s the best part of working at EnviroVoters?
“The best part of working at EnviroVoters has been the consistent motivation to learn. Before my internship, I wasn’t well informed on the different political sectors of the environmental crisis and the climate justice sphere. I think there is also something to say about the accessibility of politics for the general public. Regardless, EnviroVoters has helped me develop into a more knowledgeable environmentalist and has enhanced my awareness as an activist. It has been truly inspiring to see such a dedicated and hardworking group that pushes transformative change where many don’t believe necessary.”

Santiago M. RodriguezLegislative Affairs Intern

Since August, Santiago has worked directly with the Senior Legislative Manager to write support letters, track new bills, and conduct data collection and entry for the 2021 Environmental Scorecard.

What inspired you to get involved in the environmental movement?
“I have always been interested in political advocacy and social justice, but it was only recently that I became involved in the environmental movement. It has become increasingly clear that one of the most pressing issues in the next decades will be the effects of climate change. I want to do my part to make sure we don’t collectively look back and wish we could have done more to prevent it.”

What are your career goals?
“In the future I hope to gain more experience working with policy and advocacy and I hope that my work can directly further the goals of racial and social justice.”

What’s the best part of working at EnviroVoters?
“The best part about working at EnviroVoters is working with people who share a vision of a better world and who understand that world is indeed possible. Through my internship I have been able to gain valuable experiences that will further my career goals in political advocacy.”
