SACRAMENTO, CA – The California Environmental Voters Education Fund (EnviroVoters Ed Fund) responded to the California Citizens Redistricting Commission’s final vote on the state’s 2022-2031 Congressional, State Legislative, and Board of Equalization maps as an “unprecedented and successful experiment in democracy.” See below for statements from the organization in response to this moment.

Mike Young, Political and Organizing Director: “Clean energy and clean water depend on clean politics; smoke-filled rooms lead to smog-filled communities, and sunlight should power our democracy as well as our economy. While we didn’t secure every line and district we submitted to this Commission, this is a much greener map than 2011’s. Major environmental features have been united with voters committed to their defense and expansion. Major environmental problems have been united with the neighbors most deeply impacted by them and most committed to their solutions.”

Sam Sukaton, Redistricting Coordinator: “We’re happy to see some of the districts and communities of interest we supported before the 2011 Commission were maintained. The North Coast, the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, and the I-5 coastal corridor encompassing San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station all stayed in their own Congressional districts, maintaining united federal stewardship of some of our sensitive and important environmental features.”

Resa Barillas, Inland Empire Regional Organizer: “We’re deeply pleased to see two new districts – a Latino-majority seat uniting the counties around the Salton Sea, and a Sierra Nevada district uniting the voices of the Eastern Sierra by joining Inyo and Mono Counties with Lake Tahoe and the Plumas National Forest – both for the first time in the 21st century.”

Matt Abularach-Macias, Campaigns and Organizing Manager: “These maps offer unique opportunities for California voters - who overwhelmingly support bold action on the climate emergency - to send leaders who share those values to Sacramento and Washington, D.C. We look forward to reviewing these districts and those who seek to represent them in the weeks and months ahead.”
